The Portrait over the Years

The Portrait Restaurant at the iconic National Portrait Gallery boasts a rich history intertwined with art and culinary excellence. Overlooking the picturesque Trafalgar Square, the restaurant has been a cherished dining destination since its inception over two decades ago. With its doors opening in 2003, the restaurant quickly gained acclaim for its panoramic views of London’s skyline and refined British cuisine.

Having several owners over the years, it has remained a renowned destination for its elegant and contemporary design and focus on British produce. This new iteration of The Portrait has seen the Searcys team join forces with Richard to bring their combined renowned hospitality to one of London’s most iconic galleries. The relaunched Portrait Restaurant will continue the legacy and offer a sophisticated ambience that complements the Gallery’s prestigious artworks displayed: a destination where art enthusiasts and food connoisseurs can indulge their senses in an immersive and unforgettable experience.

Design Fit For Heritage

Located on the fourth floor of the Gallery, The Portrait Restaurant’s unique design has been developed by award-winning interior architect Brady Williams. The space has been given a luxurious, contemporary atmosphere, allowing for guests seated in any part of the restaurant to enjoy the careful touches and finishing pieces that give the dining room its character. From sculptures from the Gallery’s Collection to bespoke de Gournay wallpaper, guests are sure to receive an elegant dining experience from the moment they step over The Portrait’s threshold.
